Mei Li, a Chinese-American children’s book writer and illustrator, brings a unique blend of cultural richness and personal experience to her storytelling. Beyond her creative endeavors, Mei is a dedicated public school teacher and a loving mother to her son with special needs. Known for her works "Tiger’s First Words" and "Rabbit’s First Stand," Mei is eagerly anticipating the release of her third book in the series, "Dragon’s First Twig," scheduled for January 2024.
Hailing from Toishan, a village in Guangdong, China, Mei's early years were steeped in the warmth of family, delicious food, and the beauty of nature. Relocating to Brooklyn, New York, with her parents and four sisters, Mei faced the challenge of learning English as her second language. Her initial three years in New York were spent in an English as a Second Language class, where an inspiring teacher ignited her passion for education.
Mei's artistic journey unfolded at a visual arts high school in New York City, where she crossed paths with her future husband. After overcoming fertility challenges, Mei and her husband joyfully welcomed their micro-preemie son, weighing a mere 440 grams. Despite the difficulties, the family navigated the highs and lows together, grateful for the companions joining them.
The rich tapestry of Mei's life serves as a wellspring of inspiration for her stories, as seen in her blog entries. In "The Why," Mei reflects, “Once I got on the NJ transit, my fingers tapped with my son’s accomplishments as a nonverbal autistic child with medical needs and my niece who will be our first tigress. When I got to my stop, I was done with the draft! It maintained its 300-word limit and the word Shui.” In "Propagating a Seed," she shares a heartfelt moment spent with her son during winter break, where his creative exploration became the catalyst for her artistic expression and the beginning of children’s book publishing.
Currently residing in New Jersey with her husband and son, Mei frequently returns to Brooklyn, New York, a place that holds a special space in her heart.
